Staff Therapist

Hello! My name is Dr. Valerie Velarde (she/they, queer identified), and I am a Staff Therapist at Freelife Behavioral Health. Thank you for being here and considering psychotherapy as a possible tool in your healing arsenal. I believe allowing yourself to be compassionately and nonjudgmentally witnessed and informed by our time together has the power to radically change the circumstances that bring you to therapy.

My Background

I have worked in the mental health field for nearly 15 years. I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender studies, respectively, from the University of Utah in 2014, and a graduate certificate in LGBT Health Policy and Practice from George Washington University in 2015. I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) from The Wright Institute in 2023, where I worked predominantly in community mental health settings, studied social media, and organized groups related to unpacking whiteness. I have lived throughout the United States and greatly enjoy learning about and serving my community in Chicago. During my free time, I enjoy cuddling my two cats and lovely partner, perusing local eats and haunts, and studying astrology.

My Approach

While I believe you are the ultimate expert on you, I utilize my training in depth psychology, activism, and personal experience to engage as your ally while humbly challenging you to realize your therapeutic goals. Our time together will offer us the opportunity to understand your situation, honor the totality of your experience, and access empathy for the parts of you that tend to stay hidden, ignored, and in need of healing. We will practice emotional vulnerability to release shame and develop practical strategies to better your mood, executive functioning, and well-being.I prioritize holistic care and can support you to access resources and community outside of psychotherapy, including medical or holistic care. Previous clients would describe working with me as supportive, humorous, engaging, and sensitive to cultural differences.

My Expertise

My expertise centers on caring for queer and trans adults, with specialties in gay men’s health and relationship concerns related to polyamory and non-monogamy. I work predominantly with people who have experienced early childhood or interpersonal trauma, recent life transitions, grief and death, anxiety, issues related to self-confidence and body image concerns, or who work in the helping professions.
